Our grandmothers mainly used glass to store food-stuffs, (though they sometimes used china or ceramic jars). The vogue for plastic containers only happened after World War II as a by product of the petro-chemical industry.
However, the fashion is turning back towards glass containers, because of the health risks posed by plastic. It's been found that plastic interacts with the foods within the container when heated in a microwave. So many meals now are cooked or re-heated in microwaves that this poses a significant health risk to your family. In addition, plastic warps, stains and absorbs food smells and odours.
But is it expensive to replace your plastic containers with glass storage containers? Not necessarily. First of all, modern tempered glass containers come at a reasonable price due to efficient methods of modern manufacture. Secondly, glass containers last longer than plastic containers if looked after properly. You won't have to throw them away because a curry smell has attached to them or because they've turned brown due to the stew you microwaved in them.
Modern glass containers tend to be strong enough so that they don't even shatter if dropped.
So really, there is no excuse for not switching from plastic to glass.
